Consultation at Cranial Tech

That is still one of my favorite pictures! It looks like she is crying...but she was really yawning :)

We had Emma's consultation with Cranial Technology today. They took pictures from all angles of her head. They had to slick down her hair because she has so much wild hair. It was crazy to see her hair slicked down like that! Even after a bath her hair is usually wild and very difficult to tame. When her hair was slicked down you could definitely tell her head is a little misshapen. After taking the pictures a therapist came in to talk about her medical history (what little she has) and measure her. The therapist thought she does indeed have left side Plagiocephaly. She said in addition to the vacuum used on Emma during labor she thought Emma was probably positioned towards one side in utero and has developed a favoring of one side. This makes her right neck muscles weak and causes her to lean more to the left side. I see Emma every day and rarely notice these things. If the Plagio continues she could develop jaw problems and orthodonic problems. The therapist said because she is still so small she would like to continue repositioning and neck exercise therapy. We will go back for a reevaluation in six weeks. Emma's case is not as severe as a lot of other children. While it is sad Emma has this I keep reminding myself this isn't the end of the world and a lot worse things could happen.

I know many of the blog readers are mom's or ladies who may get pregnant soon. You might want to read up on Plagiocephaly. This is often not mentioned by any doctor until the baby ALREADY has it. More importantly, I think it is important to educate people on what the Doc Bands are and why children wear them. Lately, I've talked to a lot of parents whose children have Doc Bands and the crazy looks and comments they get are heartbreaking. Luckily, most babies who have Doc Bands are too young to realize the judgements. You can read here about it http://http//www.cranialtech.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=71&Itemid=132

  1. I don't normally post on peoples blogs that I don't know. I came across your blog from Brandi's (out of the mason jar) and I wanted to let you know that my son 9 months old has one of the helmets to reshape his head. He has had his since November and if anything it has made him fearless. He can bump his head without it hurting him. If you have any question or would like to know about our experience with it please contact me.
